 Projector retrofit for ES
« Thread Started on Oct 26, 2008, 4:31pm »

Hi guys.

Ever loved those projector headlights that now come as standard in most luxury vehicles? Or do you just simply love the nice cutoff and width that only projectors can give. If so, it's now possible to install a pair of projectors in our headlights.

All you need are:
-A pair of projector assemblies. General rule is that it has to be an HID projector. Try to hunt projectors from a Toyota Camry, Gen 3 Honda CR-V, Acura TSX, current gen Pajero, etc.

-Extra pair of headlights. Purely optional but if you aren't comfortable gutting up your original headlights, I recommend getting an extra pair.

-HID kit. Actually, you need a new bulb since projectors can only accept D2S bulbs. The OE bulbs won't do anymore.

Then, bring all of your stuff to someone who does this for a living. I recommend bri_g of HCP since he's been doing it for quite some time and he's really good at it. Also, you can acquire some of the items from him as well if you can't find it or simply don't have the time to hunt.

Once you bring in all that stuff to bri_g (or anyone who does this), it'll take him a week or so to do the retrofit, and once he's done, you need to bring in your car for alignment and install.

Here are some pics:

Before the install, purely stock even the bulbs.

OE lights' cutoff, basically nothing special, but lacks visibility.

The install.

Installing the HID kit as well. If you have a current HID kit installed, try to ask the installer if your current ballast can accept the D2S bulbs. If so, you just need to replace the bulbs.

Done, looks fast but it actually took a couple of hours to reach this stage. Only left to do is alignment.

Shot of the retrofitted headlights with the low beams on, there's practically no glare.

Low beams off, you woudn't think that it was retrofitted, very clean.

The projector's cutoff. Though the Camry projectors don't exactly give a sharp cutoff, the line is there, and it provides great width and intensity. Color temp is 4300K

Not really, you could find a pair for a fair price, normally takbuhan ng mga ganyan nasa 6-10k depending on car make and model, not includng labor. Labor goes for around 6k.

But IMHO, the additional cost for the retrofit is well worth it, it's guaranteed to put a smile on anyone's face. I have yet to meet someone who did a retrofit na di natuwa hehe. ;D

To all my CSG brothers and sisters, if you've got HIDs on your ES, please be friendly to other motorists. Either do what Keane did or please try and re-aim your headlamps for the least glare. ;D

Yep meron since there are now a handful of local units now equipped with projector assemblies.

Kaya sa HT choice nila yung TSX or the S2K kasi they give a sharp cutoff and great width.

I got mine from a Toyota Camry, cutoff is not so sharp but it's ok for me, I'm just looking for width.

Yours is from an S2K right, love that cutoff. :)

Those are D2S bulbs (4,300k) in Keane's low-beam projectors, which came off a 2005-model Toyota Camry. The Camry projectors were chosen because they also use D2S HID bulbs of the same color temperature and they have very decent cutoff for the price. :)

Please see the difference between stock halogen and D2S HID on Keane's 7th post from the top. :)

Thanks for answering pare. :)

Yep, I used 4300K HIDs since the Camry projectors can only accept a D2S bulb. Guess the 4300 is a bit yellowish hehe, but I like it. :)

Pag fogs ba keanne, advisable din na retrofit? Or the OEM housing would do? Then aim na lang ng mabuti. Thanks!

The housing of ES foglamps are a bit small to fit the projectors. :)

If on HIDs, IMHO, please aim them lower to reduce glare. :)

Yep it's a bit too small for a projector assembly to fit.

IMHO, after the projector retrofit, I see no point in using the foglights anymore. Fogs are there to give you extra width, but wit the tremendous amount of width that the projectors give, I just leave it off.

I'm not sure if other guys who do retrofits have done one already, but I'm the first ES owner to have the retrofit done by bri_g.

About the look, it'll look ok naman IMHO. Nakagawa narin ng EK si bri_g and it looks good naman.

Sure, I'l PM it to you right away. :)
